The transition back to school can impact all family members, not just students. Schedules change, anxiety may rise, and excitement looms in the air. This transition can be very impactful during the elementary years, especially for young children beginning Kindergarten. Here are some tips to make the transition go as smoothly as possible for your family!
Preparation
Going to events held before the school year begins can help students feel more safe and secure with their new classes, teachers, and peers. These connections can help students have a smooth first day while being surrounded by familiar faces. Meeting the staff at your student’s school can also put parents and grandparents at ease.
Practice
Practicing the at-home school year routine in advance of the first day can help the transition back to early mornings, hectic schedules, and less time with families easier. I recommend communicating the upcoming changes and practicing new routines 1–2 weeks before the new school year begins. This includes bedtime!
Expressing Feelings
It helps students to hear how their parents are feeling about the change. Are you sad about seeing your child less? Share that. Are you anxious about what the new school year may look like? Share that you are feeling nervous, too. Are you excited for what your child will learn this year? Share your excitement. When children and adolescents see you expressing your thoughts and feelings, it normalizes their feelings while allowing space for them to share their own thoughts and emotions surrounding the new school year.
