Become a Mental Health Advocate

In spite of recent progress in reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues, society still holds a negative perception of mental health disorders. People who live with a mental health condition still face great discrimination, prejudice, and stereotyping. The stigma makes them feel ashamed and afraid to get help from available mental health services. This is why it is vital that we have as many advocates as possible in our St. Louis community.

You can become an advocate for yourself and others by raising awareness around mental health. As more people learn about mental health, more people will know how to support themselves or someone else with their struggles with mental illness. It becomes easier for people to seek therapy and get diagnosed. Advocacy may also give people with mental health disorders the courage and resolve to practice self-care and continue getting treatment.

You can support and speak up on behalf of people living with mental health conditions in these ways:

  • Get involved and use your voice on social media to speak about mental health topics.
  • Participate or volunteer in mental health awareness events like Mental Health Awareness Month.
  • Organize mental health awareness events in your school, organization, or with your local council.
